About Kitty Ault
I absolutely love what I do, and working with my clients! Dressing up, playing “make believe” and organizing my “stuff” is my thing. My mother was in the modeling business, so fashion and style was always a part of my life! My family was conscious, wore hand me downs, recycled clothing and found and repurposed things! We always looked our best without being over the top and it felt good! Fashion for me has never been about the most expensive thing you can own but more about a practical approach to being stylish and creative!
In 2005 our family moved to Santa Fe, NM. I returned to the fashion arena with a focus on wholesale, retail and resale. I emphasized on sales and marketing, but adored working with customers. My passion is to make life simpler with methods for dressing more confidently and efficiently, branding for your professional and personal image and allowing your lifestyle to be authentic and complimentary to who you are! I am excited to build confidence and empower the way you shop, dress, design your space and create your special look with an emphasis on reuse and sustainability.

Bunny 00:00:02 For those of you who are new to the I Love New Mexico podcast, I want you to know that this is a place where there are no boundaries about around who we speak with or what we talk about, because my goal always is to dig out the best New Mexico stories to share with you. For those of you who have been following the podcast for a long time, you know that I especially love talking to people who are making a difference where they live and who are making the lives of the people they come in contact with better and and frankly, more interesting. And luckily, today we get to talk to somebody who’s also making the lives of those that she’s surrounds herself with, for lack of a better term, prettier. I got to tell you, Kitty Alton, I have been friends for a long time, and I consider consider her one of my best friends. And Kitty runs an amazing business called KA style where she, does things that she’s going to talk about later. But first I want to say thank you, Kitty, for being here and for being who you are. I just love who you are as a human.
Kitty 00:01:20 Thank you. And I also consider you one of my best friends. That’s sort of what happens in my work, too, you know, it’s sort of my my clients become close to me. but I am so excited to be here because I think the thing that intrigued me the most was bringing KA style in the conversation of, here we are in New Mexico and how I work with clients here. Of course, I have clients in a lot of other places as well, but fascinating. And you’re going to like this money. A lot of people that reach out to me from out of state were originally from here, which is kind of crazy. And I it’s totally not a planned thing, but quickly, just for those people listening that don’t know what KA style is or what I do. my tagline is refashion, recycle, renew. So I work with clients on a one on one basis, with everything having to do with fashion to your front door.
Kitty 00:02:38 And it starts mostly in your closet because, you know, people reach out to me and they want me to help clear out their closet, shop in their closet, you know, recreate their look, get rid of things, recycle things, consign items, and then how do we refashion your whole vibe and make you perhaps feel better? And then the renew part is really this ultimate goal, which is sort of taking the wilted flower to bloom. If I can say that, I mean, people sort of get really sort of upset about how they feel about their clothes or their home or what’s going on, or they’ve just moved and they’re stuck. And so we get unstuck and we sort of really make something happen. people here in New Mexico are so diverse, which is what makes my job so fun. you know, you could work in the. I’m from New York originally and can work in New York, and everybody from New York is pretty much from New York. And there’s this sort of not to completely stereotype that, but it is very kind of standard, The diversity here is so fun! I have no client that is the same.
Kitty 00:04:03 Every single person I work with has a different vibe and a need, and a conversation that tests me on providing them with help and aiding them in whatever way I can to make their life, better. I guess is the best thing. I mean, I I’m a resource, but we also really work on things together, and it’s a very team approach, which is nice.
Bunny 00:04:32 And I want to I want to say really quickly upfront because somebody might be listening to this and say, I would be so intimidated to have Katie Alt come into my house and start talking to me. I want to tell all of you that we’ve done. Kitty and I have now done this several times where I’ll say to her, I have got to have a different look for this event. Usually for Cancer Foundation events And Kitty’s the most approachable person in the world. She’ll come into the house, she’ll, you know, we’ll we’ll sit together and and visit about what I want. And then we it’s like getting in the closet with your girlfriend and.
Bunny 00:05:13 And you and you are so good at pulling things out that I. I haven’t looked at. I know this is true of everybody who’s listening. I. There are things in my closet that I haven’t looked at in the last three years, unless I’ve moved, and then I’ve looked at them as I put them in a pile to transition them somewhere else. And you have this really fresh, open and very, embracing, spirit. Like, you know what? I, I know you have something special that you own already or that we can reassess the rise or that in my case, sometimes we can take to the consignment store. So that you can get a credit to find something that someone else chose to let go. And I, I just, I want before we get into the real meat of our conversation, I want people to know that you are the most approachable and kind and generous spirit when it comes to going through the crap that we all hang on to. Isn’t that interesting?
Kitty 00:06:21 It’s really nice of you to say, yeah, it is intimidating.
Kitty 00:06:25 And some people say to me, I haven’t called you because I’m just not ready. And I’m like, no one has ever ready. You gotta just jump in. But no one.
Bunny 00:06:35 Right.
Kitty 00:06:36 Thank you for saying those nice words, Bunny. I, I think the most important thing for me is I have really no ownership and no judgment on anybody. The way they live, what they like to wear, what their favorite color is. This is all about you. I mean, I sort of tagline with style consulting for how you live. Live. And so you have to. My client has to really kind of talk to me. It’s almost like a little mini interview in my first meet with somebody to really find out what is at your soul and what’s bothering you, what’s good, what what do you want to change and and then make it happen. And the most important thing and we were chatting with this about this before. But my whole focus is sustainability. I mean, let’s shop in your closet first.
Kitty 00:07:24 Let’s find out what you’ve got in there that’s hiding that you haven’t. You get numb to seeing and you don’t realize that that jacket is going to look fabulous with that skirt or those pants or whatever. And I, you know, love to put together outfits for people that all of a sudden you see their eyes lit up and they’re like, oh my God, I never thought of that. Right. And so we immediately transition positive thing where things that they already own are working. So we may end up finding holes. And yes, we may take things to consignment and, you know, might trade things out. we may have to, you know, buy something new to add to that, you know, concept or whatever it is that we’re doing. But the bottom line is you, the client, have to love how you feel in that outfit. And even when I personally shop with people and I’m like, try this on. And they’re like, I don’t even like that. I’m like, okay, going away, you know, not forcing that.
Kitty 00:08:24 And and it’s interesting because it really, you know, sometimes my vision and, and my client’s vision are completely not the same. And so we ride that until we come to a place where it’s like, wow, you know, we just got four great outfits and we can pair them with things you already have, and you’ve completely revamped your spring wardrobe or whatever. and this is a really great feeling for people. the other part that happens, which is those same lines, is people are like, I’m embarrassed to have you at my house. I really don’t like the way it looks. And I’m like, I really don’t even think about that. I come in and I’m really talking all about you and what ends up happening, which is what I was alluding to before, is the fashion to the front door. So we finished doing this whole personal presentation relook, you know, and of sort of reset on how you dress and feel and all that. And then we get into the bedroom or the living room or wherever, and my client will say, I just, I can’t stand these two chairs, and I hate the way this room is set up, and I can’t figure out a way to do it.
Kitty 00:09:39 And if there’s anything I love more, it’s like moving furniture, like, oh, listen. Of course.
Bunny 00:09:44 You do.
Kitty 00:09:46 Relocate the sofa and put it over here. And, you know, in New Mexico you move here. And a lot of the houses are charming, but they’re dark, they have long holes. And, you know, some of the older adobes really need to pop out windows or, you know, a French door here and there. Sometimes the bedrooms are small, and if you put, you know, do a bay window or you do a French door out to a little patio or something, which is not a big deal, all of a sudden you’ve gained not in physical but in visual space, you know, many feet of light and openness and the whole thing. And so I do a lot of that, especially for people who don’t have access to good construction electricians, electricians, people that do all that kind of thing, painters and whatever. So I have a great crew that works with me, and I have another great crew that will pick up and move things to trash, to donation, to recycling.
Kitty 00:10:48 So all these things, it’s a sort of a moving feast of how you reset your life in a small way or a big way. And it really depends on what your needs are. And we try to, you know, kind of accommodate on all those levels with a happy ending. I mean, I, I like to pride myself and I, I feel like we really get the job done and by the end of it, people feel better. I mean, what is wrong with feeling better? I mean, we live in this beautiful place. We have great weather. You can wear anything you want to any time of the day because it’s New Mexico. You know, if you’re feeling like sequins and boots, do it. It’s so not judgmental here. And I think that’s one of the special reason I love it so much. well, I.
Bunny 00:11:41 And I, and I want people to know that this is, you know, you do this for a broad spectrum of personalities. The person I think of immediately is, you know, we had Barbara McCullough on the podcast, maybe last week or a couple of weeks ago.
Bunny 00:11:57 And I remember when she and I had just met and she was going to donate a piece of art to the foundation for the sweetheart auction. And she said, oh, I just got done with my photo shoot. I mean, Barbara’s at the top end of her 70s, and you spent time with her revamping her style for headshots and for, you know, looking like somebody who did art here. And she was so thrilled. I just that was a great example of how you created such a happy ending for somebody, wasn’t she?
Kitty 00:12:33 I’m so glad you brought her up. She’s one of my favorite people. and an incredibly beautiful artist and person inside and out. And she really came to me. she found me on Instagram, and, And that’s a really interesting thing to bring up. I mean, how do people find me? I mean, a lot of people, it’s word of mouth. People know me. You turn to someone and just say, oh, call Kitty. You know, she’ll help you with your outfit for the Cancer Foundation event or whatever.
Kitty 00:13:02 But, she found me on Instagram, reached out to me, and we met and she was at a transition place and needed to really revamp how she looked. We completely coordinated her whole photoshoot for her website hair, makeup, outfits. I don’t think we did. We might have gone shopping at resale once, but most everything I found was in her closet and, we bought a jean jacket. I remember that. And, anyway, because we did outside and inside and she had cool hats and great boots. And so it was just we we came up with some great looks, and it was so much fun. she still reaches out to me every once in a while when she’s going to do an Instagram video or something and say, okay, Kitty, I promise I’ll wear lipstick. And I’m like, don’t forget that. And, it’s kind of my little mantra. People that know me are like, oh my God. I remember running into you at the grocery store and I don’t have lipstick on.
Kitty 00:14:11 I said, it’s okay, that’s all right. But, she’s really special. And you’re right. We took her from not feeling confident to, oh my God, does she own it now or what? So impressive.
Bunny 00:14:26 She she does. You know, I did a portrait sitting with her, a one hour portrait sitting with her nice last Saturday. And she and my husband had never met her. And he came in and he said she’s one of the most joyful, kind people I’ve ever met. And I said, I think that her. Well, she’s been doing art for so much of her life. I really think that her confidence level and believing that she’s, that she’s a really special artist in her own right may have. I don’t think it developed, but I think it certainly grew over the last between the pandemic and now when she should. You know, you helped her restyle, but she also, she just has become this amazing mentor for so many people. And she’s so joyful in her skin now.
Kitty 00:15:20 You’re absolutely right. It’s so great. I had another situation where I had a woman who lives in Maine reach out to me. She’s originally from Albuquerque, and, she’s in her late mid 30s, and she had just had her second baby. And she is living in Maine and she loves it, but she really misses the southwest. And she found me by googling me. And so we did a whole closet clearout on FaceTime. I do a lot of zoom and FaceTime workouts. Super fun. you know, for people that can’t be with me in my presence, we just throw clothes around on screen. It’s hysterical, you know? And it’s pretty funny. But, we end up laughing a lot, and it’s it’s really a fun experience. But I really helped Nadia. we up ticked her whole look. She was going back to work, and she works remotely and just felt that she really needed some access to some new looks. And she wanted somebody from the southwest to kind of remind her of that vibe.
Kitty 00:16:39 Or tell me, you know me. Tell her what she had in her closet, which was already speaking that language, or what she needed to grab or something like that. we found a couple of really funky, fun fringed jackets. I mean, just stuff like that. But, I mean, there you go. With that tie to the Southwest and New Mexico, and it’s in your blood. You live and breathe it, and there’s such a positive thing about it, which is why I love working here. It’s really, it’s it’s different. I mean, I’ve worked in a lot of big cities. I’ve traveled and done a lot of, you know, retail, wholesale sales around the world and the country. And there’s an enrichment quality of working with people here that, once they get over the intimidation factor and they jump in, it’s so fun. I mean, I come home, you know, 2 or 3 days a week and say to my husband, I just had the best meeting today.
Kitty 00:17:42 You know, I just I really love what I do. And and I think that Combination. I’m working with clients so that they feel better and I make that happen and I feel good with them. It’s I mean, you can’t lose, right?
Bunny 00:17:59 It is so cool. I we have to tell. I want I want you to tell people how you got to New Mexico and what you. I mean, we’ve talked a lot about what you do, but, this is your home now. Talk to talk to folks about that.
Kitty 00:18:14 so my I’m originally from New York, as is my husband, but his family moved, and he’s in real estate, as you know. And, his family moved to, New Mexico in 1969 70. So when we were raising our kids, we would be out here once or twice a year visiting grandparents. Our kids learn to ski here. and I’ve always loved New Mexico. The first time I ever came was in the late 70s, early 80s, and I remember driving up from the airport just going, oh my God, I could live here.
Kitty 00:18:54 And heretofore, I have to say, I spent all my summers in Montana. My dad’s family was from Montana, and so I just thought that was the ultimate Western place to ever be. And then I had this reset when I came to New Mexico. So when we decided to move here in 2005, it was sort of post 911. We needed a change. And, we decided to come to Santa Fe and be closer to family, and it was incredibly welcoming. I never felt like we missed a beat. We came here entrenched, went to work, kids went into schools. I felt really always some trouble here. I don’t know, there are people that come and then leave in a few years and go. I can’t handle the altitude. Nobody ever calls me back. Everyone’s too slow on the uptake. I kind of like all that. And frankly, I don’t think people are slow at all. I think people work really hard here. And when they’re not working, they deserve to not work.
Kitty 00:20:13 but. So that’s how we ended up here. We we bought a house on old Santa Fe Trail. our kids went to school here. It was great. And, they love it and love to come back and visit, and, I, I worked in a various different elements here in town, mostly in retail and resale, and did national wholesale sales for a, active sportswear company called Sense Clothing, for about 6 or 7 years. And they just, dissolved a few years ago, but, it gave me a great touchpoint based on my previous sales and marketing background to really broaden my perspective. And, you know, when I started Kay Style, which is now and about to be seven years old, I know, I know, I can’t believe it. I kind of had had this moment. I kept telling myself, no, kid, you really don’t want to go back and work for yourself. I’ve done that 2 or 3 times, but all of a sudden I realized there is a need out there, and especially here in Santa Fe, with helping people get dressed better, guiding them, you know, finding a path that’s not intimidating to themselves.
Kitty 00:21:32 And one thing led to another, and here I am. Boom. And so, you know, we’re in New Mexico probably for the rest of our lives. And I think given the craziness in the world right now, I’m really glad we’re here, buddy.
Bunny 00:21:49 Oh, I know, I know.
Kitty 00:21:52 I really am, I’m grateful.
Bunny 00:21:54 It feels like a safe, very welcoming place. I mean, I’ve I’ve lived elsewhere. I mean, almost by mistake.
Kitty 00:22:04 It happened.
Bunny 00:22:05 Yeah. It happens, but, I you did say something that I think is really important to people to hear is that this is this is a great place to raise a family. I don’t.
Kitty 00:22:18 Absolutely. Well, first of all, there’s nowhere, you know, just because we’re in the United States of America, in America, that you can send your kids to school, that if you’re not an advocate for your children and involved that you’re going to find, an easy ride. I mean, no one’s doing this for you.
Kitty 00:22:39 You have to work together as a family and cooperatively with their schools. and our schools do get a bad rep. I have to say that, my oldest son, our oldest son was already in college when we moved here. and then the two younger ones went into middle and elementary school. And, so it was really an interesting, transition for them. And we had them in public and private school, but they both ended up being in public school. They both graduated from Santa Fe High. And I have to say that some of the teachers at Santa Fe High are, you know, they’re Fulbright scholars. They’re incredibly wise, smart, guiding humans. And I loved it. And, you know, my kids were really athletic. The sports offered here were extensive. I never felt like there was a lack of that. I had a boy that played hockey, lacrosse, soccer, you know, and somebody else swam and hockey, lacrosse, I mean, we we were all over the place. I felt very supported as a mother and a parent.
Kitty 00:23:55 And again, we it’s small enough that we were just a touch point away. If you were at work and there was a situation you could run over to school. It wasn’t a long bus ride or whatever. but I think, you know, people need to step back and really assess, you know, how they see it and, and be an advocate for their kids and support them because they can come out of our school system and grow up safe and wise here in Santa Fe. Every town or even, you know, anywhere you live has troubles and issues. I mean, crime is everywhere. Problems are everywhere with, you know, families and whatnot. But you just have to seek your path And, I don’t know, I felt I felt it was a good place. Ultimately.
Bunny 00:24:50 It’s still wise. I love this. You’ve got to seek your path. And the cool thing about living here is that you’re allowed to do that. And totally. Yes, you’re you’re allowed to seek your path because there are so many of us here that are doing I mean, nobody fits into a mold.
Bunny 00:25:06 I mean, you really can’t. I can’t think of anybody I know who fits into, some sort of a standard mold that the rest of the people accept. It’s.
Kitty 00:25:19 Well, that’s kind of what I was talking about, that stereotypical thing. And, you know, I’ve lived in Chicago, New York, the South and North Toronto. I mean, there are real sort of frameworks for how you you know, what you look when you like, when you go to work or when you go to the parent teacher conference. And there are no, boundaries here that Someone’s telling you, I know that’s inappropriate, and I think that is what makes it free and comfortable and welcoming and non intimidating. And you can be who you want to be, which kind of jumps back into why I do what I do. Because sometimes people have to revisit who they are and who they want to be. They kind of lose their path. And so part of my job is to sort of re-establish that for people. And often people say to me, oh my God, Katie, do you have a psychology degree? And I’m like, no, I probably should, though, I mean, yes, no.
Kitty 00:26:26 It’s so, important to really, you know, get into your head and really know what you’re all about. And that’s the building confidence thing. Ultimately it is. You know, as I was talking about, when you feel better, you have better confidence and better self-esteem, and you present better and your whole. Your whole routine upticks. And I mean, seriously, we all need that, you know, and, it’s healthy and you feel better about yourself. I mean, at the end of the day.
Bunny 00:26:59 So, Kitty, tell people, I mean, you don’t have to talk about your rates, but I’m sure that there are people listening who are like, man, I would love to call Kitty, but I bet I could never, ever afford a consultation. Talk about how that works.
Kitty 00:27:14 So it is really very, easy. I charge my base charge is $75 an hour. And when you first meet me. And which is not expensive. And I’ll give you a point of reference on that in a minute.
Kitty 00:27:30 But, when you first meet me, your whole first half an hour of talking to me, which is sometimes all we need is free and and then we jump into what we’re going to do, we make a plan and so on and so forth. Stylists, lifestyle consultants like myself in Denver, L.A., New York, Houston are charging anywhere north of $150 an hour. And sometimes that’s just for initial conversation. And I really did the research and felt that was a little hefty. I mean, my whole concept is, again, let’s not spend money, let’s create with what we have and then see where we need to go with that. So I hope that people don’t find that intimidating. That’s the other thing. I just, you know, when I pick up clothes to to recycle, take to consignment, I move them quickly. I mean, people people call me after 2 or 3 days and I’m like, can I remember that sweater? I gave you I think I want it back, and I’m like, oh, really? Okay.
Kitty 00:28:40 And I go and retrieve it, you know, from artifact over on Barca Street or ooh la la or somewhere. and but so I kind of make a point of don’t change your mind, but, Yes.
Bunny 00:28:55 Yeah.
Kitty 00:28:56 My, my, you know, my cost structure is, is pretty reasonable when we get into a lot of, a lot of work, whether it’s your home or a really big closet reset, you know, it adds up. I’m not going to say it doesn’t, but I have this great, sort of metric that if you are consigning, I often have done a comparison that most clients that can sign a pretty good volume of things will remake in dollar amount at least 10%, if not 20 of what they’re spending to make this happen. So there’s a give to get kind of recycling churning deal going on.
Bunny 00:29:44 And I know I know about that. So yes, that’s exactly how it’s worked. Yes.
Kitty 00:29:48 This is such a second hand town, Santa Fe specifically, but all around New Mexico.
Kitty 00:29:54 Albuquerque has a ton of recycled opportunities, whether it’s thrift stores or consignment stores. And, so there’s lots of ways and this goes for furniture and home goods as well, to make a lot of money. I mean, I have clients that I work with all year round on an ongoing basis who will send me cute little texts going. I just got a big check from consignment warehouse. I’m so excited. And it’s just great because it kind of validates what we’re doing, right? So you spend money to make a little money, but you get clarity and you’re on a different track, which is kind of where you wanted to start with to begin with. Does that make sense?
Bunny 00:30:38 Yes. And as a bonus, I think as we wrap up, I’d love for you to share with our listeners, you know, if somebody’s coming to town, coming to Santa Fe, for the weekend, what are your can you just give them some great ideas for consignment stores to check out for, both clothing and, home goods?
Kitty 00:31:03 Yeah, definitely.
Kitty 00:31:04 first of all, if you go to my website, I have a preferred partner page which lists my very, very favorite. And what is your website? It’s KA style Santa fe.com. So KA style Santa fe.com.
Bunny 00:31:20 And that link is going to be in the is in the show notes.
Kitty 00:31:23 So okay. Thanks. but on that list and then further to that clothing consignment stores artifact consignment on Baca Street in Santa Fe. down in Albuquerque. There’s a place called What Goes Around Comes Around. and, a couple of new ones. I have to go scope out. So I’m a little reluctant to say anything because I’m not sure yet. Ooh la la. Here in Santa Fe, on across from Connie’s on the old Santa Fe Trail is great. 801 consignment is phenomenal. It’s right next to Whole Foods. they have really unique things. and those would be my top clothing. There’s about 45 or 50 in general, secondhand across the board consignment stores in Santa Fe, per se. for furniture, my favorite is consignment warehouse.
Kitty 00:32:24 Mine, too. I really love how they operate. They’re really very, very good business people. They have a great turnaround. my clients do really well with home goods and furniture there, and you can find great things. I think that, the Raven has extremely special, unique stuff. There’s just always something that you’re just, like, blown away when you go in there. there’s great little antique stores like the, Santa Fe Antiques Market that has an Emmet run, which I think is really a worthy try. and then, you know, when you have luxury goods, there’s the real deal collection and the real deal collections on San Francisco, right across from down from the LingQ. And that’s like Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Chanel bags, scarves, accessories, shoes. those would be some of my favorite. there’s a lot more vintage shops that are cropping up. There’s a new one called Montoni, which is Japanese for waste, not want not. And that’s over on Early Street to totally go check it out.
Kitty 00:33:41 Angela and Brad run that very cool spot. if you’re into vintage vinyl clothing stuff, it’s great. So I’m I’m in and out of all these stores on a regular basis, and, it’s pretty impressive. They’re very picky. They’re very good at curating what they sell. And you can do really well in the resale market here in Santa Fe.
Bunny 00:34:08 Well, thanks for that list, Katie. And I want to go, if you’re going to Albuquerque to check out stores, I want to go along on that trip.
Kitty 00:34:16 Right.
Bunny 00:34:17 That sounds like these are the. So, as you can tell, Katie has one of the coolest jobs in the world. And we have to wrap up. But, Katie, thank you so much. I want folks to find you, but I also just want to say thank you for, I it’s inspiring to think about re. refashioning yourself in a lot of different ways, but you do it with such a generous heart, and you are always so determined for your clients, regardless of their age or how they look, or you know, what they weigh or where they live.
Bunny 00:34:54 You’re always so generous and kind about helping people find, something fresh about themselves that they maybe didn’t know existed.
Kitty 00:35:03 I hope so. I mean, you have to be your most beautiful self, right? No matter who you are.
Bunny 00:35:09 Inside and outside. Yes, any.
Kitty 00:35:11 Gender, any person, any size. Just be your most beautiful self, okay?
Bunny 00:35:18 Which you are all the time. So thank you very much.
Kitty 00:35:21 I don’t know about that but we try. This has been a pleasure. Thank you.
Bunny 00:35:26 So it has it has. And I want everybody to check out the show notes and find Kitty and, take a look at what she’s doing because it’s.
Kitty 00:35:36 Give me a call. We love it.
