I know many people are surprised when I talk about my kayaking adventures in my home state. I’ve been to Cochiti, Heron, Abiquiu, Fenton and of course Ute lake. But finally, I was able to check off a place I have been wanting to explore for the first time, Santa Cruz Lake State Park. First of all, the drive was peaceful and felt like traveling to somewhere totally different. As I followed a friend on a narrow winding road, I was amazed at the calm and stillness around me. The road from Santa Fe takes you past Tesuque and up through Nambe right on the first part of the High Road to Taos (if you know you know).
I figured when we pulled into this lake it would be boisterous and rowdy as other lakes I have been to usually are. But, when I finally got there, I was shocked at the serenity and happiness I saw around me. Individuals on the shoreline fishing and sitting together, small boats dropping in the no wake lake and fellow kayakers drifting through the refreshing water.
After dropping in, I steered first toward the dam to take a closer look. Then found myself being pulled to the shady banks on the other side of the lake. Off to my left I saw an inlet thanks to other kayakers and ventured over to a hidden gem. I watched as beautiful black and white ducks flew off in unison and drifted upon the surface of the water. The surrounding nature and wildlife were so undisturbed and serene it was the type of place where you just feel like you need to be quiet and still. Honestly, that’s probably what I needed most from that day trip. Other than a little sun and some light exercise, the still and peacefulness of being on the water did wonders for me.
This gem is only 31 miles north of Santa Fe and perfect for so many different water-tivities: kayak, paddle board, small boat, fish or simply enjoy the scenery.
